how would i scan my computer to check if there are duplicates copys of any files.

Beyond Compare doesn't have the ability to scan for duplicate files, although this is on our wish list to consider for the future.

There are a number of dedicated duplicate file search utilities. I don't have a specific tool to recommend, but if you go to a site like www.download.com and search for the worlds "duplicate file" it should give you some suggestions.
