Having used Beyond compare, I have encountered a few problems, with the file size, the files I am trying to compare are downloaded from a IBM Mainframe as text files, these can be very large over 2Gb. the time it takes is very long, it seems to make my keyboard freeze up. Does beyond compare have any statistics on how long it would take for a large file to be compared and is there a limit? Has anyone else encountered the same problem?

Re: files limits
We haven't tested files that large here, but I have heard from one user who is comparing up to 2GB successfully. I don't have know exactly how long it takes them to compare, but I got the impression it's a good hunk of time. Theoretically it should handle files larger than 2GB in 2.1, but I haven't heard from anyone one way or the other on that.
To speed up the comparison you'll need to modify your file comparison rules. The easiest would be to adjust the sync quality slider towards "Fast and Coarse". Depending on the types of files you're comparing you might even be able to adjust the "Skew Tolerance" setting lower. If you just need to see the files side by side, without actually aligning them, set the skew tolerance to 1. Do not switch to the "alternate" alignment method for files that large.
The other thing you can try is to add a line weight. The quickest weight to add is ".*" with a weight of 1000 or 5000. The encourages faster matching, but hurts the alignment if there are a lot of sections of similar text.Zoë P Scooter Software

Re: files limits
Hi all,
I came to the forums in order to figure out whats happening with the ftp capability of my registered version of beyondcompare. After reading this thread, it's obviously not going to support > 2GB files because of the ftp library limitation. Is it possible to support > 2GB files using rsync or sftp or something ?

Re: files limits
Rob,
BC does not natively support sftp right now, it only works through an sftp to ftp bridge, so that is still limited to 2GB by the ftp capabilities.
BC also does not currently support rsync, although it is something we would like to add at a future date.Chris K Scooter Software

Re: files limits
Rob,
The FTP library we're using is under active development, and will eventually support files larger than 2GB. We're waiting for the new version to stabalize, so I can't be much more specific than that, but we are planning on improving the FTP support in the future.
We're still evaluating options for SFTP support, but one option would leverage our existing FTP code. In that case they'd get large file support at the same time.
Rsync will probably be the last of the three to be implemented.Zoë P Scooter Software
