  • Shared Application ?

    Hi,

Can BC be installed on a server and run as a shared server application or does it have to be installed on each individual PC ?

So if we say purchased 5 copies then a copy could be used by someone on the network providing there is 1 out 5 copies not already in use ?

    Re: Shared Application ?

You should be able to run BC from a shared network drive. BC will still store each user's individual settings in the registry. Make sure you copy your registration key into a file called BC2.key in the BC install directory so the registration will be read from that file instead of the registry.

If you want to have a separate install on each machine, you can make the setup easier using our knowledge base article at:

But does this mean that anyone can access the software on the server and once 5 copies are running then the 6th attempt to start a copy will be declined ?

Beyond Compare does not have any mechanism for limiting concurrent use.

...which means you should get a license big enough to cover everyone who uses BC, whether or not it is installed on individual workstations or shared on a server.

Is it per-user or per-installation? I'm the only one who uses it, but I sometimes use it on another machine (not at the same time).

You can get a single-user license and install it on any number of computers, as long as only you use it.

Okay, that's what I thought - just checking.

ok ... how does this work then.

we would be better deploying the application as a server application, in order to provide wider availability but we only need 5 licenses for use within a team of 30.

We do not want to install 30 copies and pay for 30 licenses as the most using the application would be 5 at any one time.

The issue is whether or not the this would seen as "30 licences - the total number of people with access to the software" or "5 licenses - the number of concurrent users at any one time" on the basis that we would either manually (or programmatically) manage the number of concurrent users as 5.

If you can implement some kind of mechanism that limits concurrent use, then you can go for the smaller number.
