Is it possible to compare XML spreadsheets?
These are actually Excel workbooks... just the saved format is different.

Have you tried creating a file format based on the xls file format? The xls file format uses VBScript to create an invisible instance of Excel, load the xls file and export the data to CSV. This should work for xls spreadsheets as well.
