  • Tab Key in Folder Compare--Wrong Behavior

I tried to search so I apologize if this has been discussed.

I just upgraded from BC2 to BC3. Main reason, I'm hoping it fixes Vista x64 and Windows 2008 copy issues related to memory consumption. But that's another thread.

My first issue with the upgrade: WTF is with the TAB key NOT advancing between controls. Now when I'm doing a folder compare it cycles through the directories list.

It's driving me batty. In BC2 it advances to the next control.

I'm happy to get flamed with a "Just flip the bozo bit setting". Please flame away if you can bring back the STANDARD behavior of advancing to the next control.

    Thanks!

Beyond Compare uses the Windows CopyFile API to copy all files, so it shouldn't use significantly more or less memory copying than Explorer does. Vista did change the copy engine quite a bit, and it's been changed again in service pack 1, so make sure that you're up to date.

I'm afraid I don't see the issue you're describing in the directory comparison though. In both BC2 and BC3, if you're in a folder comparison window the tab key cycles between the treeview, the two path edits, the filter edit, and the session dropdown. Are you seeing something different?

Yes I'm current. I just did a copy on Windows Server 2008 EE x64 with 16 GB of RAM. As I did the copy, taskman shows memory consumption spiking in the on Performance tab of Task Man. But maybe this is normal.

Regarding tab: no I am not seeing BC2 behavior.

OK, I've just tested, try this:

Start BC2 folder compare with everything blank.
Place cursor in Left Combo-box with mouse
Type C:\Program, press down arrow, and then hit TAB
C:\Program Files is selected and then moves to the next control.

In BC3 folder compare with everything blank.
Place cursor in Left Combo-box with mouse
Type C:\Program, press down arrow and then hit TAB
You end up on the next entry (in my case C:\Program Files (x86)).

      Cheers,

I also find the newer behavior annoying, but it actually is the standard. A quick check of Explorer, IE and FireFox shows they do the same. The TAB is advancing to the next control, which is the auto-completion dropdown.

Personally, I prefer to use the downarrow to select an auto-complete item. We'll discuss it here to see if we can offer this as a tweak setting.

          OK. I hate standards. :-)

Bottom line is I'd love a "Make it work like BC2" feature.

At least by talking it out, I found a "fairly" reasonable workaround. If I can only retrain my fingers.

          Cheers,

          Brian
