  • SnapShot crc vs Folder Compare with bin

    Hi,

    Two questions,
If I use, Folder compare and Sync using SnapShots and a crc setting.
And if I do a daily Sync and files from the previous day have been appended to,
Will the SnapShots Sync re-download the entire file?
Or will it do a check and send only the appended data to update the file?

If I use, Folder compare and Sync using a normal Folder Compare with "bin" enabled.
And if I do a daily Sync and files from the previous day have been appended to,
Will the entire file be retransmitted?
Or will the "bin" check allow only the appended data to be sent.

Will be scripting this through a sftp wan.
At this moment I have approx 2.1 gig with 1,000 files.
Approx 25 to 50 meg a day is written in the folder.
The files are randomly created, written to and closed.
The files may have anywhere from a few K to 15 meg or so.

My initial thoughts are that a SnapShot would be the way to go, as I would only have to transfer the actual new files and possibly also the entire file of those which have been appended to.
With a Folder compare bin, I will have to retransmit all data for a bin check. Might as well just re-download the entire folder? yes/no?

    Thanks.

    Hi Robert,

BC will always retransmit the entire file if it needs to; it doesn't support resuming arbitrary files or assuming that the files have just been extended and not changed. It also doesn't currently support using a snapshot in combination with a sync of any sort, so if you're doing CRC-based comparisons it will re-download every file every day.

Based on your description of the types of changes, it sounds like just comparing file sizes would be enough to detect differences, but it will still retransmit the entire file for those that have been changed.
