I also agree with mgillespie. I love the current implementation. I would not want another indicator visible from the main window...

However, I do recognize what Tom is requesting, and I would suggest that the information he is asking for could be put on the Help \ About dialog. For Example:
    Version 3.0 (build 8507)

No updates available (Aug 2, 2008)

I agree with mgillespie. It works the way it is. If, for whatever reason, my connect is down and it can't connect to Scooter's web site, I can wait a day to get my update. If I think there is a problem, I can take Chris' suggestion.

How do you know -- what's your measurement of reliable? What if a firewall or proxy server blocks it, or if the server's been moved and your DNS cache doesn't update? How long do you have to run BC for the check to complete on various types of connections? There's no such thing as "one size fits all" with network connections.

Are you saying the current notification isn't "distracting" when it's visible? Notification could be as simple as an icon changing color -- it doesn't have to be huge.

Thanks, Chris -- but I'm aware of those items. I'm not sure how that relates...?

    Version check indicator

What would you guys think about some sort of indication when there isn't a new version available? There's a clear indicator when there's an update, but something like Current version OK would also clearly indicate that the version check was successful (and is finished). Otherwise, you're left sort of wondering whether (or when) it happened. Clicking on it could still take you to the revision history if you're curious whether a particular pet issue has been addressed.
