Before I go and try and install the beta, can both versions exist at same time in different folders? can I migrate BC2 settings to a seperate BC3 install?
BC2 and BC3 beta install to different locations by default, and store their settings in different locations by default, so you can install both on the same system.
In a future release, we may limit the right-click context menu in Explorer to one or the other version active at a time.
Beyond Compare version 3's beta supports the import of some BC2 settings, but not all. Your custom Rules, and some of your settings, will need to be changed manually.
what does the beta install do about right click now
What happens now on installing bc3 with a bc2 already installed as relates to the right click? Will a bc3 install take over this feature from bc2? Is there a way to reset this from within bc2 or bc3 to have it turn this on/off without going through the install procedure?
If both are installed and enabled you'll currently have two sets of menu items with different icons. Once the official 3.0 release is done there will only be one set again. Yes, you can enable/disable both BC2 and BC3's menu items in the Options dialog on their respective Startup tabs.

i guess you might say that settings import feature does not support my use case very well. the most important thing i cared about - my custom file comparison rules - aren't supported and weren't imported (despite being exported by bc2 just fine). :\
