  • Feature Request: Add "Increment Search" in text editor

I love "Increment Search"(Ctrl + I) in Visual Studio, could you provide this functionality?

Thanks for the suggestion, Summer. I've added your example program to our Customer Wishlist entry on the subject.

      Ctrl-Shift-I

Maybe I've misunderstood, but isn't that what Ctrl-Shift-I does?

        Ignore me

Ignore me, I've not had enough coffee today - I'm thinking of UltraEdit.

How would you propose that the incremental search work? Against the selected pane, or against all panes? Only in a text compare? Or also to incrementally locate files in a folder compare?

In UltraEdit, the incremental search is cancelled if you go to a different file. In my opinion, I would want the search to be isolated to the pane that has focus... but to stay active so long as I remain in the same compare session without cancelling the incremental search. I would want BC3 to retain the entered keypresses when I click on a different pane so that I don't have to retype the incremental search criteria when I move the focus from pane to pane. I also think that the ability to incrementally search a folder compare session would also be cool.

Actually, this statement was misleading. In UltraEdit, the Incremental Search criteria is shown in the status bar. When you click on a different tab (a different file) the Incremental Search criteria remains in the status bar until you do something. Pressing F3 activates the incremental search in the new file (retaining the existing incremental search criteria). Any other activity cancels the incremental search.

In BC3 I would propose that pressing F3 should not be necessary to move the focus of an incremental search to a new pane of the current text compare or merge session. However, F3 could still be used to keep the incremental search active when moving to a new tab or compare session.
