  • Windows 7 - Access Denied on My Pictures

    Windows 7 Home Premium
    - Access Denied when trying to read My Music, My Pictures, and my Videos
    - Already "Run as administrator" under General - Advanced
    - Already "Run this program as an administrator" under Compatibility - Privilege Level

    Suggestions?

"My Music", "My Pictures", and "My Videos" aren't actually folders on Windows 7, they are links for compatibility with older applications, it isn't possible to actually open them even as administrator. The actual folders in Windows 7 are named "Music", "Pictures", and "Videos".

To handle this in BC, just use a filter to exclude the compatibility links. The easiest way is to right click on them and select "Exclude".

Access Denied - Windows 7 Files

I am having the same problem with general files I have stored in the "Documents" Library of my Windows 7 machine. Admittedly, I am new to Windows 7 so this could be more of my problem than any other. The problem? I simply moved hundreds of files (word, excel, etc...) onto my new Windows 7 machine and started working with them. When I tried a BC (3.2 beta), nothing was allowed to update. All "new" files on the Windows 7 machine received the "Access Denied" message. I tried "sharing" the directory with "everyone" but this didn't help.

      Suggestions or insight??

How were you trying to update the files when it failed? I have 64-bit Windows 7 and set one side of the compare to:

        C:\Users\<login>\Documents

I was able to copy files to the documents folder. I was able to open the files in a text compare and update them. I was able to right-click on a file and choose Open With -> Text Edit from the context menu and edit the file in a new tab. I was able to save the changes.

It might be a permissions problem. Right clicking on the shortcut to Beyond Compare and selecting "Run As Administrator" might help.

Look, this is still a problem with BC 4. I cannot add update or rename files on the second computer. I've tried running as administrator, granting full control permission on the second computer to HomeUsers, Administrators, and the administrator user ID I log in with on both machines and use to access files from one machine to another. There is no problem reading files on the second computer or copying them to local computer, but I can't get it to go the other way.

Can you write to the files on the remote computer using Windows Explorer? If you can't write using Windows Explorer, then you'll need to fix Windows permissions, either for the network share or for the files and folders.

Another option to as a workaround is to run Beyond Compare on the target computer, then copy/sync from the source computer as a network drive. If you run BC on the target computer then you're less likely to run into problems with write permissions.
