  • How to set Format in a folder compare

I am comparing two folders. Each has the exact same Type (COBOL) and encoding (EBCDIC) for every file. The auto detect does not pick up the correct Type or Encoding. I have thousands of file to look through and do not want to reset the Type and Encoding for each file compare. How can I set the Type/Encoding for the entire folder compare - Session?

    Hello,

Unfortunately, the Encoding information is not savable as child Session Information. To do this, you will want to Clone your COBOL file format, set the Encoding in the cloned version, and then set your Folder Compare session to only use the cloned version of the rule using the Pro version's Session Setting's Misc tab (uncheck normal COBOL file format, leave cloned version checked).

I have a folder compare, and then I compare a file from the folder compare (is this a child compare?) - I go to Session -> Session Settings - on that screen there is a drop down at the bottom that has 4 options: Use for this view only, Use for these files within parent session, use for all files within parent session, update session defaults. What is the purpose of these 4 options. No matter what i select from a child session, the next child compare does not have my saved "text compare - session settings".

        Hello,

"Use for these files within parent session" would only set for the active, specific pair of files (and never the next files).

"Use for all files within parent session" should use the saved Text Compare Session Settings for any child session of the same type.

The Encoding tab, however, does not support this behavior. Instead, you need to use the Misc's tab's feature to only allow certain File Formats (Pro version feature). You would then use the Misc tab to enable the Cloned version, and disable the normal version. (And the Cloned version would be disabled and not used in your other sessions).
