  • Snapshot broken in Beta 3.2.1?

Using build 12831; snapshotting a directory which has 5 subdirectories, all of which are symbolic links to hard drives. The snapshot essentially fails instantly, writing a 1KB file instead of the 16MB file I expect. Tried on 2 machines, both under 32-bit Win XP. I *do* have "follow symbolic links" checked under the Session Settings' Handling tab.

This worked fine with all 3.x releases before the beta.

Is there some other setting I should try? Or is this a bug?

How did you create the symbolic links?

I tested on a Windows Vista system using "mklink /D link target" to create symlinks to other drives and didn't have any snapshot problems. "mklink" isn't supported on Windows XP.

      Link Shell Extension:

      http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinks...kshellext.html

I used this to create a set of junctions pointing to a set of disk drives (e.g., E:-I: ); the junctions reside in a subdirectory (e.g., "DriveCollection") on my C: drive.

This has all worked for many, many months until the most recent Beta noted above.

Ah - one of my favorite tools.

If you create "Directories" referencing to disk drives they are different from junctions. Also the tools homepages names them "volume mountpoints" which might be the naming defined by M$

So BC might handle junctions the right way but has some homework to do for mountpoints ...

          Hello,

How is the new setting "Follow Symbolic links" set in your Folder Compare -> Session Settings -> Handling tab?

The default setting is different than previous default behavior, but you can enable the option and set that as the Folder Compare default on the Home screen, or use the dropdown to Also Update session defaults.

How does this work for you?

As noted in my original post, I *do* have "follow symbolic links" checked under the Session Settings' Handling tab. BC3 doesn't handle the symbolic links for snapshots in either checked or unchecked states for this control.

              Thanks, John.

Sorry I missed that in your initial posting. I've reproduced the behavior in office and I'll make a tracker entry to get this fixed.

Be aware, that Tools/Save Snapshot DOESN'T refer to the active Folder Compare session, but only presets the source path!

It's a seperate task to perform with BC where you can modify the source path for example. Beneath others you may include "Symbolic link targets". With this option checked my snapshot saves the target folders and files as well.

                  Greetings Lutz

Thank you! I flew by the dialog so fast I didn't see the new check box; yes, it works, all is well!
