  • Text Compare - Session Settings modal dialog

    Please, please, please...

I am constantly fighting with the Text Compare - Session Settings dialog.

    Example 1:

I go to the Replacements tab to set up several replacements. The problem is that I can't get back to my text compare to copy and paste the left and right values into the Replacement Item dialog. I end up aborting the effort to go back to the editor, copy one side and try to remember the other side. If I forget the other side, then I have to abort the effort a second time. When the Replacement Item dialog is open, I can move neither the main Beyond Compare application window nor the Text Compare - Session Settings dialog to position them where I can see what the replace with text should be and manually type it in. After bouncing in and out of the Session Settings dialog several times, I ultimately end up opening the files in notepad so that I can copy and paste the items I need into the replacement rules I'm creating without leaving the Session Settings dialog. This whole experience is very frustrating every time it happens.

    Example 2:

I go to the Importance tab to set up several grammar rules. The problem is that I can't get back to my text compare to copy and paste the values that I want to rework into regular expressions. I end up having to close the Session Settings dialog between every grammar rule to get back to the editor to copy the values I need. Even if i wanted to manually type in the text I'm working with, I can't always see it. When the Grammar Item dialog is open, I can move neither the main Beyond Compare application window nor the Text Compare - Session Settings dialog nor the Text Format dialog, to position them where I can see the text that I need to manually type it in. After bouncing in and out of the Session Settings dialog several times, I ultimately end up opening the file in notepad so that I can copy and paste the items I need for my grammar rules without leaving the Grammar tab on the Text Format dialog. This whole experience is very frustrating every time it happens.

Please change the nature of these dialogs so that they are not modal to allow a user to copy text out of the text compare. I don't mind if the dialogs stay on top as long as all open dialogs can be moved. I don't mind if all functionality on the toolbar and drop-down menus are disabled when the Session Settings dialogs are open. I don't even care if the left and right compare panes are read-only when the Session Settings dialog is open. I just want to be able to select text and copy it into the clipboard so that my work is not hindered, and I'm not forced to fall back on Notepad.

    Thanks, Michael.

Improving creating new elements is something we would like to work on and I've made a Wishlist entry with your notes.
