  • USB Key "Backup"

I've been a BC user since the early days of V2 but have never strayed beyond its "compare" and "copy/move" functionality.

I notice that BC3 has a sync capability and I am wondering if it can help me with backing up a USB key?

Essentially what I am looking for is something that will sit (quietly!) in the background until a USB key is inserted. It will then compare the current contents with a "backup" directory on my c: drive and update the backup (one way copy key to HDD). If possible without user intervention (I'm lazy)

If so what settings do I need to make in BC3?

    Hello,

The trick here would be the auto-detection of the Key. BC3 does not have this ability built-in, but you could try adding a custom AutoRun to your USB key that would trigger a BC3 script call. BC3 itself could be installed on your computer, or on the USB key as a Portable Install.

Are you familiar with BC3 scripting? It is a command line call to bcompare.exe "@C:\script.txt", where script.txt contains a series of basic commands that will run sequentially. Script is documented in the BC3 help file in the Using Beyond Compare -> Automating with Script section.

Alternatively, you could just have a Portable Install on the usb key, boot it up, and load a saved Folder Sync session whenever you'd like to perform the update.

Thanks Aaron - I'll look into the scripting.

The only flaw in the autorun solution is I only want the backup to run on my home PC not on every PC I plug the USB into.
