  • Data Compare

Wanted to report a bug and a feature request.

In Data Compare I have ; delimited data and I need to merge two of them. I use the very limited editing feature to merge some cells. After that though all the ; at the end of any line I edited this way are gone. Lines not edited still have them though.

This brings me to my suggestion. It would be sweet if you could select and move left and right cells make a Data Merge basically. I really hate MS Excel. Please make this application even more awesome!

    Hello Tom,

We strip out the trailing delimiter because that is the same behavior other table editors (including Excel) do when they save a file. I tested this with both BC3 and Excel using .CSV files with trailing "," empty columns.

Are you familiar with any table editing software that behaves differently? Are the empty trailing semi-colons important to your file format, and if so, how are they used?

As a workaround, you can use the Session menu -> Open with Text Compare to edit your files in the Text Compare. Text Compare will not remove any trailing semi-colons from your files.

It is used to signal the end of the data since there can be variable amounts of "cells". And no I don't know of any off the top of my head that don't, that is why I don't like any of them.

Your software is the best so far though. It is a fairly simple fix with some regex though.

The thing with using text compare is you can not edit and move "column" data. You can not use ALT selection to select columns even if they were aligned by the ;. That is one nice feature your editor does not have; ALT selecting text such as in Visual Studio.
