  • Issue with Full Edit Overwrite

I'm doing a 2-way Text Compare, in Full Edit (F2), Overwrite (Insert key).

When I hit the Insert key, it toggles between Overwrite and Insert mode. The cursor changes from a Block in Overwrite Mode to a Vertical Bar in Insert Mode. However, I'm not observing expected behavior.

I was expecting that in Overwrite Mode, if I pasted text (either CTRL-V, or right mouse click Paste), that it would overwrite from that cursor position. Instead it inserts. I do not see any behavioral change between Insert and Overwrite Mode.

Thanks for the report. We're following similar behavior as other text editors like Notepad++. Do you have any examples of Text Editors we can test against that behave as you describe, and Paste Overwrite?

TextPad is the one I use.

I found this problem reported back in NPP6.1 online, but I seem to be observing the same behavior in NPP6.6

        Hello,

Thanks for the example. I've dug into it a bit more and tested Wordpad, MS Word, and Delphi. They also have the same behavior that we do: insert will allow for overtyping, but not an 'over paste'. TextPad appears to support this, but it seems to be non-standard behavior. It probably isn't something we'll be able to tackle, as our real-time update of the comparison makes this more difficult to implement than if we were just a text editor.

Overpasting versus Overtyping. I see the distinction in behavior now.
