  • Possible to jump between text differences on one line?

I use Beyond Compare in conjunction with CVS to display the 'diff' of two versions of a file. This works very well on a line-by-line basis.

However, I have some files with very long lines where I have to make changes within the line, and sometimes copy over someone else's changes to lines where the changes are within the line. A specific example is in an .htaccess file where I have a long "deny from" statement with multiple IP ranges.

It would be very useful if I could jump between the differences on a line in addition to going from changed line to changed line. Is there a way to do this?

    Hello,

Not as you expect in the Data Compare, but there are a couple of ways to tackle this:

    1) In the Data Compare, use the View menu -> Columns, and enable only different columns. This should help if you have large sections of equal columns that you don't need to review.

    2) You can open your files in the Text Compare using the Session menu -> Compare Files using -> Text Compare. Here there are two commands: Next Difference Section and Next Difference.
Next Diff Section defaults to Ctrl+N, while Next Diff defaults to Ctrl+Shift+N.
Next Difference will go to each difference in the line.

Do either of these solutions work for you?

      Thanks Aaron!

#2 satisfies my needs perfectly. At any rate, it's good to know about #1, just in case.

It's funny how I didn't see the next and previous difference options. I was under the incorrect impression I could only go from section to section.

      Have a great weekend!

We try to offer the tools to define the sections to accurately group together differences you intend to group together. If that doesn't work, though, and you need to jump between differences in the line, we have the additional Next Differences command.

If you have any other questions come up, please let us know.
