  • BC on ARM CPU (Apple M1) Macs

Beyond Compare 4.3.7 (current version) is only available as an Intel CPU Mac application. However, it will run on ARM CPU (Apple M1) Macs using Rosetta 2 translation.

A native ARM CPU version of Beyond Compare is in development but doesn't have a scheduled release date.

Edit: A native ARM (M1/M2) Mac version is planned for Beyond Compare 5, release date not set.

Great to be informed about that. I really appriciate that and ordered 10 more licenses for my developers today.

Thanks for addressing this issue. Just another reason Beyond Compare is one of my favorite apps!

        Hi Chris
No rush but just wondering if there's any news on this development?

Thanks for the follow up. It is something we're still actively working on, but we don't have any announcements at this time. I'd suggest subscribing to the News and Announcements forum for email notifications for any major news.

Do you think it will be a v4 release or only part of the v5 release?

              Hello,

Native macOS on ARM/M1 is planned for a BC5 release (date not set). Given the scale of the project, we don't plan on being able to support BC4 as a native M1 rebuild.

For Apple M1 users debating if they should purchase Beyond Compare 4, licenses come with 12 months of upgrade protection. Upgrade policy: https://www.scootersoftware.com/shop...=upgradepolicy

eta? bc4 kills my ram and battery on my macm1.

i might need to switch to something more native like meld. (even though i prefer bc4)

ameeno Seriously? You think Meld is "more native" ? The last Mac build was from April 2020—definitely no Arm code in there. Their homepage still calls it "OS X" (it was renamed to macOS in 2016) and even proudly says "On OS X, Meld is not yet officially supported"...

Actually, i just picked meld as an example, have not tried to build it to arm64 yet, but might work,

i know https://doesitarm.com/app/kaleidoscope/ is more expensive, but its arm native.

Any updates? I am starting to fancy going for an open source alternative.

No, we don't have preorders for BC5 and we don't have a timetable to announce at this time. We prefer any purchasing decisions be made based on the current feature set meeting your needs, which you can evaluate whenever we have a BC5 trial. I would suggest signing up for email notifications on the News and Announcements sub-forum for a push notification.

If you need something now, any purchase of BC4 comes with Upgrade protection for 12 months, along with discounts discussed here based on when/how you purchased BC4:
