Performance of v4.4.5 when fullscreened on an external Studio Display connected to a "clamshelled"/closed 2021 M1 Pro 16-inch MacBook Pro via Thunderbolt isn't really noticeably different than before the update -- still very laggy, and double-clicking on files doesn't always register. Performance is slightly better when not fullscreened, but not an order of magnitude better, and I prefer to run BC4 fullscreened.

Appreciated. In an effort to help get BC4 working better in this environment, if you can reduce the window size a bit, how much smaller do you need to make it to get 'good enough' or 'decent' performance? In my own testing, I don't see quite the extreme performance hits, but I can get a decent boost by making the window just a tad smaller than full screen (80-90%) on my non-studio ultrawide, but this issue is somewhat variable depending on the hardware/monitor/MacOS combinations.
I've added this specific set to our notes on the subject, and I've mentioned it a few times in the thread, but I'll stress that anyone interested should subscribe to the News and Announcements sub-forum for email notifications for any potential upcoming alpha/beta opportunities.Aaron P Scooter SoftwareComment

Firstly, thank you for BC4I use it almost daily. I've recently switched from Windows back to a Mac - an M2 macbook air - but I too have been experiencing sluggishness when scrolling on the Mac. Making the window smaller does make it smoother. I have to make it a 1/4 of the desktop size to make scrolling acceptable.
I am running version 4.4.5 of BC4 Pro. mac os 13.1, 16GB ram and using it on the macbook's own display, no other screens connected.
Many thanks,
Rob.Comment

For me, the issue seems related to refresh rate on the monitor. If I use the "ProMotion" refresh rate for the Built-In Display then it's pretty laggy scrolling unless I make the window unusably small. if I set the refresh rate to 60Hz then it performs much better even full screen. Ditto for my external monitor (using 60Hz instead of 120Hz).Comment

I can confirm that the issue is still present and I didn't notice any difference with 4.4.4 sadly. I can't wait the new version of Beyond Compare. I tried a lot of other comparison software, and BC is still the best. Hope you will be able to fix that soon !

I can confirm that BC 4.4.6 is much zippier on my M1 MacBook Pro 16". Scrolling on the built-in screen is much more fluid. I don't think it is quite as fluid as scrolling on my low DPI external screen, but it is very close. I'm very encouraged by the 4.4.6 releaseComment

To clarify, 4.4.6's fix is another improvement but not a fully solved problem, similar to 4.4.5's improvements. We're also working on BC5, which has more underlying core changes that allow a greater performance boost and compatibility with m-series hardware.Aaron P Scooter SoftwareComment

I'm really disappointed that Beyond Compare fails to live up to expectations on the MacOS platform. Been using it on Windows for years. I'm also disappointed that the "official fix" appears to be "wait for BC5". That's not really fair, IMO. I think we deserve a proper and complete fix for BC4. It's encouraging to see Scooter reps engaging with folks here and providing updates that somewhat address the issues.
Beyond Compare is really unusable for me on my 2023 M2 Macbook Pro 16". I hope that we don't have to wait for BC5 for a proper solution.Comment

The proper and complete fix has required a lot of work and overhauls, that has been very resource intensive and not something that can simply back-port into BC4.
If you look at our average software life cycle, we're generally way above par for what our free minor updates provide and how long we continue to support a paid major release. Our upgrade policy similarly is better than most anything else I'm familiar with. While many other software releases have annual paid releases or a subscription fee, BC4 has had free "minor" updates since 2014 which already included major features and a few substantial rewrites like 64bit support across all three platforms. A lot has changed since 2014.

And because we don't want anyone to feel bad about buying the current software release right before we cut over to the next major version, we have a wide window for free upgrades (which we haven't announced yet for BC5, but last time it was a year), and a half priced discount for everyone else. We have our current policy posted here:

We also don't want you to wait much longer either. You've seen me post on the forums with the same response a few times because we don't have anything concrete to share, but I can vaguely allude that we've sent out some early test builds already, and subscribing to the News and Announcements sub-forum would be a good way to get notified about testing opportunities.Aaron P Scooter Software👍 1Comment
